A Day In Rehab

As an Exercise Physiologist I have the opportunity to work on an occasional basis at the Saint Vincent Hospital Lismore in their out patient rehabilitation programme. I recently helped out for a day and I would like to share with you some of the patients challenges and why I believe that exercise is one of the most important things that you can do to stay healthy.

A lot of the patients are there through no fault of their own just that life is catching up to them. My role is to try to keep them as mobile and functional as possible and to help prevent falls due to instability and lack of muscle strength.
Some patients are there with knee and hip replacements and each patients recovery time is very different.  The patients that were more inclined to maintain their muscle strength and fitness before surgery were recovering so much faster and were mentally stronger to deal with the physical challenges.
Some patients had  chronic conditions associated with poor lifestyle habits, which we see so often in our culture today.  These patients were often the hardest to motivate however when they did get going their one regret was that it took a serious debilitating health condition for them to realise that life can be fragile and we so often take our health for granted.
I enjoyed working with all of the patients however I would find myself feeling quiet emotional at times as I know that their time on this earth is ending.
So please if you value your health and enjoy living life to the fullest take 20 minutes a day to exercise and move your body its the only one you have.

Registered Pilates Instructor & Remedial Massage Therapist

Qualifications:

  • Certificate in Pilates Instruction
  • Diploma Remedial Massage
  • Senior First Aid

Personal Note:

Coming from a sports massage background I have worked a lot with clients suffering from back injuries and chronic pain. I realised that as a therapist I could only do so much to alleviate the symptoms but felt somehow limited in providing long term change. Pilates turned out to be the answer for my clients to be able to be in control of their own body, increase body awareness and prevent injury.

After gaining my qualification I was trained further by a physiotherapist who gave me a more specific insight into using Pilates not only as a form of exercise but also as a rehabilitation tool.

I like to share my knowledge, enabling you to re-connect to your body, learning to utilise the muscles which provide safety and optimum health for your spine in a gentle and personal environment.

Chiropractic Care and the Relief of Dizziness, Tinnitus and Sinusitis

In a recent study conducted by the The Central Hospital of Sogn and Fjordane in Norway, patients suffering from dizziness, tinnitus and sinusitis were subjected to ongoing chiropractic treatments throughout their hospital stay.  Many of the patients had neck and jaw restrictions often causing overcompensation and pain in the lower neck and upper back.
The post chiropractic care results found that;
  • 87% of the patients reported an average of 50-60% improvement in their symptoms
  • All patients had more mobility resulting in a better ability to perform their daily activities.
  • Using a pain scale, the average pain experienced throughout the group was 8/10.  Post treatment, the average pain had decreased to 3.7/10 – a decrease of 4.3 points.
Whilst chiropractic care is often used to remedy pain, it is evident that benefits can be derived for other ailments such as these.

Did you know?
When you walk, each step uses 200 muscles.  Some would argue a relatively easy yet beneficial workout!
